Conference Leader Day, Sunday, October 28, by

Haley Scribner, ACL

What is your favorite part of an Area Conference?

Mine is connecting with other Leaders!

I am really looking forward to all of the amazing speakers we have lined up for the conference, but I’m even more excited to see all of the incredible Leaders who will be traveling through New York to attend.

Attending a conference for continuing education is very important, but it can be just as valuable to connect with other Leaders and see how they are doing within their Groups and get feedback and ideas to bring back to your Group. I find that I always leave a conference feeling rejuvenated and excited to try something new.

I plan on being available all day on Sunday to talk about any and everything you want to cover. I plan on attending sessions, but if you want to talk through Group dynamics, ideas you have for the Area, or any other general thoughts and feelings, I’ll be available! I think that it is so important to hear from every single New York Leader. My “door” is always open!

Funding for the Conference by Aimée Readhead AFC

The Conference is just around the corner. Have you considered taking on a conference helping job with the conference or Area Council position as a way to save some money on the ticket? Ask Heather or Haley how you can help!

Have you considered promoting memberships and the idea of making a donation at your next meeting? Let the Group know that memberships are a wonderful way to commit to and support the Group and that donations of any amount are gratefully received. All funds received this way could be used to subsidize your conference experience.

Do you really want to attend the conference and still need some financial help? Have you considered whether you are eligible for a scholarship or support from the Area? Please contact Heather, Haley, or me. Please feel free to contact me if I can help in any way.

Seeking Conference Donations
by Helen McCullagh
Conference Donations Coordinator

The 2018 LLL NY Area Conference, Breastfeeding in the Millennium, is just four weeks away. Have you registered yet? Many Leaders are planning on attending, and I hope you are sharing the information with your Group attendees and members and encouraging them to participate. It will be a great event and a chance for Leaders, members, families, and health care professionals to make new connections and learn further information.

Area Conferences are opportunities for fundraising also. We are soliciting donations for a Tricky Tray fundraiser. Items may be grouped in a theme or by themselves.

No baskets are necessary.

  • Items can be humorous, thoughtful, pleasing, practical, functional, lovely, silly, fun, or reflective.

  • Individual items are welcome. We can create a group of like-themed donations.

  • Items for contribution can be brought to the Area Conference or sent ahead of time to Helen McCullagh, 72 Hyatt Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704.

Want to contribute and not sure what is appropriate? Contact Helen at 914-237-1595 or mccocchiara@mindspring.com.

Leader and Group Dues

Thank you to those who have paid their Leader and Group dues for 2018. There are still a handful of Leaders who need to complete this task. Please chat with your co-Leaders and see if they have paid their dues. Regularly talking to co-Leaders is a great way to make sure everyone’s contact information is up to date and ensure that everyone is properly entered in the LLLI database.

If you or a co-Leader plans to retire, please let Haley or me know as soon as possible. By having our Leader List as up to date as possible before the end of the year, Alliance is able to take an accurate headcount of active Leaders and the Area need only pay dues for those Leaders who plan to continue leading in 2019.

Reducing Conference Costs by Heather Gansky, ACE

Six Ways to reduce conference expenses.

  1. Register with a Leader Applicant. You and the Applicant can email lllnyace@gmail.com for a $10.00 off discount code for each of you.
  2. Encourage a parent to register with you. You can email lllnyace@gmail.com for a $10.00 off discount code.
  3. Donate a basket or item for the tricky tray or silent auction. Your Group will receive ten free raffle tickets either Friday evening or Saturday morning when you check in at the registration table.
  4. Consider carpooling with others.
  5. Consider reaching out to see if there are jobs to do to help with the conference. You will get a $10.00 discount code for helping out.
  6. Consider rooming with a co-Leader, parent from your Group, or another Leader. Leaders traveling alone could fit three Leaders in one room that has two beds and a pull-out couch.

Locating Leader Applicants
Cynthia Massey, CLA

Leaders are aware of how many Leaders are in the Group, and maybe the Groups in close geographic proximity, if we’re in a part of the state lucky enough to have multiple Groups. We know when new Leaders we’ll be working with are accredited, or when our own Group, or one nearby, begins work with a new Leader Applicant. But do you ever wonder about new Leaders in other parts of NY? In the past few years, an average of 15 new Leaders have joined our ranks per year, and 2018 looks to be on track to follow that trend. To date, nine new NY Leaders have signed their Statements of Commitment in 2018! The Area Team hopes to welcome even more new Leaders at the Area Conference in October.

Don’t forget – I’ll be available to work with all Leader Applicants, with or without their supporting Leaders, during the conference weekend! The not-quite-as-happy news in NY is that only two complete applications have been submitted since the beginning of the year. Is there someone who’s been attending meetings which you think would make a great Leader? Think about approaching that person to explore an interest, and maybe plan a meeting to discuss the prerequisites. Bring them to the Conference too! The LLL NY LAD, Pat, Regina, Cori, and I, are eagerly awaiting new Leader Applicants to work with!

Leader Survey
Haley Scribner, ACL

Hello, Leaders!
As Area Coordinator of Leaders, I want to be sure that everyone has plenty of opportunities to be heard and ask questions. It’s important we all have access to relevant information. Please take a few moments to respond to the survey. I’m excited to hear from you. Thanks so much for your time and for all of the work you do supporting nursing families across New York.

Once the survey results are compiled, we will share them in the eBlender, the Area newsletter, so everyone knows what broad themes were raised. Responses will be reported anonymously with any information that is shared within this survey.

Please complete the survey here: https://goo.gl/forms/1hV8dRPEbbW0vnlp2

Working with the New York Public Library
Leigh Anne O’Connor, IBCLC, Area Media Liaison

I love leading toddler meetings. I love being in the presence of toddlers, watching them discover the world, watching them grow, explore, and observe. They are so genuine. And I love supporting their parents. Nursing a toddler can feel lonely. There’s often no support or safe space to complain or revel in the experience of parenting and nursing these little humans.

I used to host toddler meetings in my living room. I needed to change location when it became challenging for my first born to share her space with other children. We had a nice run at the Museum of Motherhood on the Upper East Side. When the owner moved her museum to Florida, we needed to find a new home.

At a maternity event, I met a pregnant woman who happened to own a yoga studio. I mentioned that I was looking for a new home for our toddler meeting. She offered her studio. I jumped at the opportunity. A clean open space with blankets and soft yoga blocks was the perfect home for us. About a year ago I was informed that they needed their space for more classes. Once again we were in search of new meeting space. We had a gig at another yoga studio for several months, but the timing was not a good match for us – attendance went down.

In February a message in my inbox from Kelly Yim, the Director of Adult Programming at the New York Public Library, was the answer to our needs. I met with Kelly in the beautiful Fifth Avenue branch. After the interview, a background check, and some guidance from Linda Anderson, the LLL USA Coordinator of Insurance Certificates, and some revisions to the certificate, we were approved to lead meetings in the Bronx, Staten Island, and Manhattan. Unfortunately, the Brooklyn and Queens libraries fall under a different umbrella and are not included.

We had our first meeting at the Kips Bay Branch on June 15. Not only did I have some of the same parents from before we were at the studio with odd hours, but we also had parents who found us through the library. We are listed as part of the library programming. There were ten parents at the meeting and eleven toddlers.

The space was a children’s room, so we could close the door and sit comfortably on the floor. I am happy that we have a new home where we are welcome, and it feels like we will have it for the long haul. And the parents are so glad to have a new meeting home too! Leaders interested in using the libraries for LLL meetings have to get screened, which means you sign off on a background check. Contact Kelly Yim for more information kellyyim@nypl.org or message Leigh Anne to ask about her experience.

Connecting at Area Conferences
Haley Scribner, ACL

Over the course of my term as ACL, my goal has been for NY Leaders to connect with one another. New York is a very large Area with almost 200 Leaders, which can make connecting difficult. An Area Conference is a great way to meet the Area Team, your DA, a Leader you’ve seen posting on Facebook, or to step outside of your local Group to learn how other Groups operate.
At my first Area Conference, I met Leaders who were only a handful of towns away from me, but due to the everyday hustle and bustle of life, I never had an opportunity to meet them. It was so nice knowing that there was LLL support in a community so close to my own. I was also able to meet other parents who cherished the role of leadership and La Leche League.
Sometimes it’s hard to explain the connection you feel to La Leche League. Not everyone can understand how an organization can guide you through so many stages of parenting or can give you lifelong friends and support, but that’s what LLL has done for me. At every LLL conference, I’ve attended, I have left feeling so much joy and fulfillment.
Being a Leader is special. It gives you an incredible outlook on the world and also many tools that you can use in your day-to-day life. Attending Area Conferences expands your toolbox.
I hope to see everyone at the 2018 Conference in Syracuse. I would really love to hear every NY Leader share their connection to LLL and what LLL means to them.

What’s So Special About LLL Conferences?
Scarlett S. Miles, APC

There’s a sense of belonging the moment you step into the room, even in an unfamiliar location. Every time you attend an LLL Group meeting, an Area Conference, a Leader retreat or educational symposium you walk into a room not sure what to expect. However, as a Leader,  you will experience the same welcoming, coming-home feelings every time. You can be confident that the parents around you have nursed their babies and met their needs at the breast. You will recognize the similarities in parenting styles; while not all identical, they meet their children’s needs where they are.
Parents from all walks of life nurse their babies and choose to attend Area Conferences as Leaders, Leader Applicants, and persons interested in learning more and sharing the joys and challenges of breastfeeding*.  From the Leader who greets you at the registration desk, while nursing a toddler on her lap, to the teen (now weaned!) who eagerly helps you with your bags or gives you directions, you will feel welcomed. As you travel through the sessions, meeting parents of all ages, you will be greeted with smiles and loving looks whether you’re nursing an infant or a three-year-old. It’s a beautiful feeling to see nurslings of all ages and no frowns or “tsk-tsks” because someone is nursing too long or too much. Parents, grandparents, and other loving caregivers waltzing around comfortably with children attached to them using a myriad of baby or child carrying devices, quietly send your brain reassuring signals: yes, I do that too, it’s okay, it’s normal. Normalizing breastfeeding* and increasing parenting confidence are huge benefits reaped from attending conferences.
The benefits cascade throughout the conference. You are learning and teaching every moment you are there. Your children see you meeting their needs and your own in a loving environment. Think you are a newish Leader and don’t have much to offer the other parents there? Think again! That parent who has been behind you observing you through the last session just might be a Leader Applicant who will shyly approach you asking you to demonstrate how to wear the rebozo you’re using. As the day progresses, there’s a warm feeling which permeates the rooms. At lunch maybe your LLL friends are at a table that’s already full, but a quick glance around the room shows parents at other tables will gladly welcome you to join them. You will find yourself immersed in conversations about where everyone is from, how many children, joys, and challenges of breastfeeding*, pregnancy, leading an LLL Group, sessions you liked or didn’t like, questions raised, and the conversations go on and on. Before you know it lunch is over, and the next session will be starting and you just made a table full of new friends as you all quickly exchange contact information. I still keep in touch with several of the mothers I met at LLL Conferences when our babies were infants. Spending the day attending sessions together and discussing everything under the sun until the wee hours as we nursed our babies deeply connected us on our parenting journey.
We are all different, but we share in “mothering through breastfeeding*” and knowing that our “children’s need for us is as strong as their need for food” doesn’t end even when breastfeeding* ends. You’ll leave the conference with new ideas to try with your children, your partner, and your LLL Group; not to mention the memories you created, the new friends made.  The joie de vivre you feel leaving the conference will illuminate your world for days or even weeks after the conference.

Sharpen Your Communication Skills at the LLLNY Area Conference!
Mary Fay, CSIC

Our upcoming conference offers all kind of ways to enrich your LLLeadership. Just attending an LLL Conference is stimulating, even before you get to your first session. Connecting to other Leaders, hearing each other’s experiences, sharing and learning from each other. Surrounding yourself with others who understand the passion for helping breastfeeding* families be successful, makes the trip worth traveling. It is a chance to be able to connect in person to the wonderful co-workers from across the state, familiar faces and names from LLL social media, or those you work with virtually.

Many of the sessions at this year’s conference  focus on strengthening our communication skills:

On Saturday we will explore How To Build Positive Relationships in Digital Communication. Share your digital success stories or gain support for situations you wish had gone better. We will look at effective communication when we wear our Leader hat in public forums as well as how we work within LLL circles.

On Sunday at LGBTQI+: Tools to Communicate Effectively, Wilma Matos,  Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Administrator (EDIA  La Leche League Alliance for Breastfeeding* Education) will help us update our practices to be inclusive and welcoming to all human milk feeding families.

Also on Sunday, we will experience the Collaborating with Co-Leaders Workshop. Consider how much stronger your LLL time will impact your community if you work more effectively with your co-Leaders.  Fine-tuned communication skills are the key! We will stretch the skills we already have to new lengths, so we all go home from the conference inspired to connect with and help each other be the best  LLLeaders we can be.

LAD Excitement
Cynthia Massey, Interim CLA

The more I think about attending the Area Conference in October, the more excited I get! As a Leader, I love the chance to get together with so many others who share my passion for breastfeeding*. But this year, as Interim Coordinator of Leader Accreditation (CLA) for LLL NY and Regional Administrator of Leader Accreditation (RALA) for the Northeast, I have even more reasons to anticipate this wonderful weekend. Whether you are currently working with a Leader Applicant, have your eye on that person who’s been coming to meetings for a while and you think would make a great Leader, or just hope to be working with an Applicant sometime in the future, there will be opportunities for our paths to cross.
During Sunday’s Leader workshop I will lead a session on keeping the motivation strong to work with Leader Applicants. Whether you struggle with how and when to get started or seem to find yourself losing steam as the application proceeds, I’ll have some tips and ideas for you.
I’ll also be available, informally, Friday evening and during meals, to work with you and the Leader Applicants you support, together or separately, on any parts of the application still to be completed. Wouldn’t it be exciting to have a new Leader or two (or three or more….) sign the Statement of Commitment during the new Leader Ceremony Saturday after lunch? Maybe we can make that happen! Text me any time that weekend or before at 607. 857.0235 to set up a time to meet.
Remember, Leader Applicants and supporting Leaders who register together each
receive a discount; so don’t miss this opportunity to have a great weekend full of fun, friendship, education, and maybe some progress toward gaining a co-Leader. I’m looking forward to seeing you in October!

See you there!
Aimée Readhead, AFC

I’m excited that I have registered to attend the Area Conference this Fall! So much work is being done to make this a great conference. I’m looking forward to seeing familiar co-Leader faces as well as the opportunity to put more faces to names. One of the biggest pleasures of being in the AFC position is being able to connect with every Leader in the Area when it comes time to organize our Leader and Group dues.I love receiving texts, calls, photographs, little notes, and email updates from Leaders when they send in their payments. The conference is a wonderful time for us to come together, catch up, learn, and feel invigorated about La Leche League and all the good hard work we’re doing. I really hope to see you at the conference!

Please welcome  Amber VandeKerkhoff, the new Area Online Coordinator (AOC) for LLLNY.  Amber is a stay-at-home mother to her toddler, Nina, and partner to her husband, Scott. They reside on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Before giving birth, she was a client-facing web developer and account manager for a few start-up tech companies in NYC. When she isn’t volunteering as the Area Online Coordinator for LLL of NY, she is most likely playing with Nina at the park, cooking, doing yoga, reading books about parenting or social justice, or traveling. Listening for Postpartum Depression

by Jennifer Leopold, AAPL, LMSW, IBCLC

The transition from pregnancy to motherhood can bring up normal feelings of concern for the newborn and, a new mother may feel overwhelmed with her new responsibilities.  Often hormonal transformations play a role in feelings of sadness. These highs and lows of emotions in the first two weeks post birth are referred to as the “baby blues.”  As our bodies begin to regulate, most mothers will begin to find calmness and confidence while they settle into their new roles.

If mothers continue to struggle with the realities of their birth experiences, parenting, and breastfeeding, the “baby blues” may have turned into a Postpartum Depression (PPD), most commonly referred to as postpartum depression. The mothers most at risk for postpartum depression may have a history of anxiety and depression in combination with low social support. Prior to pregnancy and childbirth, many may have never sought professional treatment for their symptoms and assumed that their worry and sadness was just a normal part of their lives.  Also at risk for postpartum depression are those who have suffered trauma, such as a miscarriage, a stillbirth, or physical, sexual or psychological abuse. If you are talking to someone who is expressing feelings of not being perfect and of letting herself and her new baby down, this is a genuine cause for concern. Listening for indications of feelings of dread, utter frustration and failure can be helpful in identifying those who need support.

Leaders are in an amazing position to start the ball rolling towards coping with postpartum depression. Asking parents if they are connected to clinicians, clergy, health care providers and loved ones is a good way find out who their support systems. Leaders can encourage families to reach out to these connections.

These are some red flags of PPD to listen for whether at a Meeting or on a helping telephone call:
•        Little to no interest or pleasure in life
•        Statements of feeling anxious, sad, down, depressed, or of hopelessness
•        Sleep disturbances  (not sleeping at all or only staying in bed)
•        No energy
•        Not eating or drinking
•        Lack of focus and trouble concentrating
•        Feeling like the world is moving in slow motion
•        Thoughts of dying or hurting oneself or someone else

We can help in many ways.  At our Meetings and on helping phone calls we can:
•        Initiate conversations about becoming physically active such as taking walks with or without baby
•        Get family and community active in bringing meals for the new family
•        Provide encouragement to at-risk parents to attend LLL meetings and join other new parent groups
•        Ask open-ended questions that allow new parents to explore what would make their lives better and more enjoyable
•        Keep a watchful eye and ear if a mother shares a traumatic birth or refers to breastfeeding difficulties as trauma.
•        Listen to their stories and acknowledge their physical and psychological pain and stress.

LLLI Insurance Certificates
It’s that time of year when many LLL Groups plan fundraising events,  World Breastfeeding Week celebrations, Live Love Latch gatherings etc. And most venues request a certificate of insurance.  Here are the simple steps to follow to easily and quickly get the certificate.

WHO?

  • Any Leader can request an insurance certificate.

WHAT?

  • A Certificate of Insurance covers the event and attendees at a property at which LLL meets.

WHERE?

  • Any location: Series Meetings, Enrichment Meetings, Live Love Latch, Leader Enrichment Workshops, etc.

WHEN?

  • A request will be filled in 48 hours in most cases. To be sure that life doesn’t get in the way, allow 14 days or more before your event for your request to be filled.

HOW?

  • One Leader handles all requests from LLL USA, sends the request to the insurance company, and then emails a Certificate of Insurance back to you.

WHY?

  • A Certificate of Insurance may be required by your rental agreement for your meeting venue.

Official procedure
Send your request to: insurancecertificate@lllusa.org

Include this information:

  • Name of Group or Area
  • Type of Event: Series Meeting, Conference, Live Love Latch, etc.
  • Date: Standard Meeting date (3rd Thursday of the month) or specific event date
  • Name, Address, and Phone number of the event location
  • Special Wording
  • Phone and email address of Leader requesting certificate

A funny anecdote from a Group mother in NYC.
I walked into the room to see my two-and-a-half-year-old stuffing my bra under the pillows on my bed and asked, “Anna, why are you putting my bra under the pillow?” Her response: “So you can grow more boobs.” Interested, I asked further, “Why would I want more boobs? I think the two I have are plenty, don’t you?” She ended it with, “Because I love that milk!” I will never forget the combination of pride in her imagination, delight that she loved nursing as much as I did, and reassurance that I still had milk enough to love.

The PROGRAM SERVICES COMMITTEE is seeking new members to participate and invigorate our work. Program Services, as described in the LLLI Bylaws, is a  “Standing Committee authorized by Article VIII Section 2 of the Bylaws and is herein commissioned by and responsible to the Board of Directors of La Leche League International for: advising it on matters pertaining to the delivery of its volunteer programs and services so that all the functions of the organization may be effectively and efficiently carried out in conformity with established policies and procedures of LLLI. The development of specific actions may be assigned to the Committee or other appropriate LLL bodies by the Chairman/Co-Chairman of the Board or Board of Directors.

Duties

This Committee shall:
·  advise the Board of Directors and make recommendations on matters pertaining to the delivery of volunteer services throughout La Leche League;
·  submit annual lists of objectives for Program Services as part of the planning and budgeting process;
·  evaluate annually the implementation of objectives;
·  evaluate annually with the Executive Director all programs and services;
·  initiate, evaluate, and update annually a five-year plan for La Leche League International;
·  meet as needed throughout the year;
·  create and supervise subcommittees as needed with the approval of the Chairman/Co-Chairmen of the Board.”
We need to work on several of the above duties. Development of volunteer services that will inspire Leaders and meet their needs for ongoing education and support as Leaders is one task we have discussed, and we are exploring ways of doing this that will be effective in a variety of settings. We also need to establish some new objectives for the coming year and work with Lee Claassen, ED, to evaluate currently existing programs and services.
We invite interested Leaders to contact LLLLeaderSandy@gmail.com to indicate their interest in participating on this Committee. Please copy Keith Williams, our Staff Liaison, at Keith@llli.org on your email.

Mixing Causes
By Cynthia Massey  Regional Administrators of Leader Accreditation (RALA) and Acting CLA

It is becoming increasingly common for a La Leche League (LLL) Leader to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), or for someone who is already an IBCLC to wish to become an LLL Leader. “The two roles, LLL Leader and IBCLC, are different yet can complement each other. LLL Leaders who are also IBCLCs recognize the responsibilities of each job and work to keep the roles separate. It is important that LLL Leaders avoid “mixing causes.” For example, Leaders cannot recruit clients for their lactation consultant practices at La Leche League meetings or when mothers contact them as Leaders. This restriction can be especially challenging for Leaders who live in communities where they may be the only LLL Leader and the only IBCLC.” (LLLI)

There are several ways an IBCLC/LLL Leader can work toward avoiding mixing causes. Separate email addresses or phone numbers for each role can ensure callers whether they are reaching a volunteer support person, an LLL Leader, or a paid professional. Having a comprehensive list of all IBCLCs in the area available at LLL meetings for a mother who may be looking for help beyond what an LLL Leader can provide is another. Just as Leaders do not endorse specific healthcare providers in other specialties, no IBCLC, including the Leader herself, should be specifically recommended. If an IBCLC/LLL Leader begins working with a mother while in her
Leader role and thinks that the help needed is becoming more specialized than she is comfortable providing as a volunteer, a referral to available IBCLCs in the area can be offered. She can include her name on the list as long as there is no pressure put on the mother to use her services.

While it can sometimes be confusing for an IBCLC/LLL Leader to navigate between the two roles, with careful thought and consideration one person can comfortably fulfill both responsibilities. Remembering to note and respect the way in which the relationship with the mother looking for help began can go a long way toward not “mixing causes” and allowing the IBCLC/LLL Leader to provide appropriate support to all who seek lactation services.

The Ripple Effect by Scarlett Miles APC

Little did NY Leader, Jen Deshaies know when she led the workshop “All Stressed Up and Nowhere to Go?” at the July 2015 LLL Alliance LDS in Queens, NY that her suggestions would travel around the globe. The following year another Leader Nancy Sobier-Maier who had heard Jen contacted her and requested permission to use the “De-stress” LDS workshop outline. Nanci then shared the workshop at the 2016 LLL European Management Symposium (EMS) which included Leaders from all over Europe and one Leader from China, Missy Wang.

Last December, Nanci shared an email and photos from LLL Leader Missy Wang in China “This is a part of my annual plan: hold three times destress salons for three different groups I am working with. And happily reached my goal.”

Thank you, Jen, Nanci, and Missy for sharing your story.

We Are Sorry
March 20, 2018
Categories: LLLI Newsletter

We have been considering this for a long time, and based on feedback Board members heard during the 14 – 15 March European Council meeting in Berlin, have realized the following statement is long overdue. We shared this verbally at the European Management Symposium (EMS) and now share it with all Leaders:

We heard you at yesterday’s European Council meeting. We apologize for the Pioneer Event of 17 months ago. We did not follow LLLI policies regarding the organization of such events. We did not ask prospective sponsors the right questions. We did not do the research that was required to protect La Leche League, which is one of the main responsibilities of the Board of Directors. After Leaders discovered that one of the sponsors was not Code compliant, that sponsor’s name was not removed from the programs. That was negligence on our part. Our reaction to the resulting criticism was to blame Leaders for talking about it.

We were wrong, we were negligent, we were disrespectful of your expertise and concerns, and we are sorry.

We are aware that there are many other issues of deep concern and will address them and update Leaders soon. If you have comments or concerns, please contact us at board@lll.org.

Posting Pickles
Katie Lewis APL

Q:  I have permission to post a question from a parent on Facebook.  Is that okay to do?

A:  Yes, it is fine to post questions we get from parents on the NY Leader Lounge Facebook page.  However, a parent who gave permission to post might change their mind about what information they feel comfortable with being on Facebook.  Facebook is also not an entirely private platform, even on private or closed pages such as LLL of New York — Leaders’ Lounge, therefore it is our responsibility to help families maintain anonymity.  It is never appropriate to cut and paste from an email and put it on Facebook. Instead, please try to paraphrase the parent’s concerns. Leaders can also contact the Professional Liaison Department at LLLNYPLDept@gmail.com for confidential help gathering information to support families.

Leaders are talking.

“So if a nursing mother gets a cold or another mild virus, and she has older non-nursing children in the house, do you think it’s beneficial to give a tablespoon or so of breastmilk to the older children who are not sick with the idea that mother’s antibodies are being made for the nursling and might be preventative for the older children?”

Was checking this group for tongue tie referrals, and noticed the list is five years old. Is there a more recent list? Or are the contacts still valid? Thanks all!  Anyone have time to update? Contact the PL department if you can help!
